Brand Spotlight: Strathcona Stockings
Posted: Jun 26 2014
What began as an Etsy project and experiment that only a grandmother could love, Strathcona's colorful, fine-printed socks have quickly become coveted items for fashion tastemakers and risk takers alike. Beloved by bloggers and editors, and featured in Vogue, Style Bubble, Elle, Cool Hunting, and V Magazine (to name just a few), Strathcona’s sweet stocking designs are popping up everywhere, including Milan runways.
The secret to the brand’s success is in the quality of the creations, which are diligently hand printed and appear as if in high definition. Each pair is individually designed, drawn, and hand printed in limited supply. The images and prints are so unique that the stockings are more so collectible pieces of art rather than soft silky slipcovers for your feet. Described as weirdly beautiful, the Strathcona prints vary from wildflowers and vintage bird drawings to photos of real tropical fruit and abstract moody collages.
Based out of Vancouver, talented artist, designer, and ingenue Ryley O’Byrne is the creator of this whimsical and sought-after brand. Ryley’s prints are influenced by her international travels and love of art and design, all of which can be viewed on Strathcona’s website and Tumblr. It’s fascinating to see her genius come to life when scrolling through the blog, and we’re thankful she has invited the world for a glimpse into her creative process. All of Ryley’s stockings are vivid and memorable, deserving of their own boutique or art installation. Luckily for us, we can now easily brighten our days with her creations, and add a piece of tropical foliage or a rich botanical to any outfit. Perfect for sporting in the summer, or just cuz, you can now find a few deliciously quirky Strathcona stockings right here.
